Teacher Treats

I found the idea for these adorable cake ball ice cream cones on Bakerella.com. You might remember seeing other cake balls I've made before at Christmas and Halloween. They are way cute and extra yummy (if you have a major sweet tooth as I do!). Her version was with the pointy ice cream cones, but I decided to go with the flat-bottom version. Here's how I did it . . .

-follow instructions on box cake mix - I used a white cake mix
-let the cake cool for awhile and then break up and crumble entire cake
-mix 1 can of white frosting in with cake
-using a spoon, fill ice cream cone with cake/icing mixture and form a mound at the top of the cone
-melt Wilton candy melts of desired color in microwave according to package
-either dip the top portion of the cone into the melted chocolate or use a spoon to spoon the chocolate over the top
-while the bottom layer of chocolate is still wet, add sprinkles
-after the first color has cooled, add brown melted chocolate to the top to look like chocolate syrup - here is where I messed up - I chose milk chocolate so my "chocolate syrup" just looks like a blob of chocolate ice cream - get the dark chocolate candy melts so that your "chocolate syrup" is dark like it should be
-immediately after adding the dark chocolate to the top, add a red peanut M&M to look like a cherry

I found that the ice cream cone became soft and was not crunchy as it should be. This happens b/c it absorbs some of the moisture from the cake/icing. I like to put mine in the fridge b/c it tastes better. Once you've eaten the cake ball portion off the top of the cone, you'll probably want to forego the cone. You'll have enough of a sugar rush anyway with just the top portion.

The traditional way to do the cake balls is to simply roll the cake/icing mixture into balls and dip into melted chocolate. Shake some sprinkles over the top and add a cute cupcake pick. Voila! You can go back to my posts for Halloween and Chirtmas last year to check them out.

This is how I packaged them to give away for beginning of school teacher treats.Of course, Noah got to taste test it first. He ended up eating it over the course of several days because it's big and SUPER sweet.
If you go with the traditional cake ball, they are much smaller, and it only takes a few bites to eat them.

On another note . . .

These are just a few examples of sprucing up a kiddo's lunch. I didn't include the rest of the car lunch for some reason, but it's similar to the Spiderman one. I put cars cupcake liners in little bowls to add to the theme. I purchased Color Mist food coloring spray at Michael's along with food markers. They work great for decorating sandwiches and lots of other foods.
