We just finished our rainbow-themed week in my kindergarten class, and it got me to thinking about making rainbow cake. I got the idea awhile back to try coloring a cake mix with the colors of a rainbow in attempts at making a pretty cool cake. I gathered Noah up one afternoon, and we set out to make it. Noah helped stir in the food coloring, and he even discovered what colors mix to make the colors orange and purple. We talked about what a rainbow is, the colors in it and even read his rainbow book. Once we had the batter ready, I thought about how exactly we were going to go about putting it in the pan. I thought about plopping it all around or trying to pour one color in one spot in the pan, but I ended up just pouring each color all the way around the pan. By chance, as we poured each color in, the colors underneath it raised up on either side actually forming the shape of a rainbow inside the pan. This was completely unexpected but quite a nice surprise. We baked our cake, and out came a beautiful rainbow. Unfortunately, in my haste, I turned it upside down too soon apparently b/c it kind-of fell apart. I think I needed to have let it cool longer, but I was so excited and pleased with the cool effect. It didn't make it to the gathering I was planning it for, but Noah and I enjoyed a yummy piece nonetheless.
stir, stir, stir
